Founded in 2000, the BC Association of Farmers' Markets (BCAFM) supports and promotes 145+ member farmers’ markets in all regions of British Columbia. The objectives of this program is to provide farmers’ market coupons to increase access to healthy local food for lower-income pregnant women, families and seniors. It also improves the economic prosperity of BC farmers who sell local progduce at BC farmers' markets.
The coupon program is supported by the Province of British Columbia and the Provincial Health Services Authority. We also acknowledge community donors for their generous support.
How the Program Works
The Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program (FMNCP) is a healthy eating initiative that supports farmers’ markets and strengthens food security across British Columbia. Community partner organizations provide coupons to lower-income families, pregnant families and seniors participating in their food literacy programs. Coupons can be spent at all BCAFM member farmers’ markets that participate in the FMNCP and can be used to purchase vegetables, fruits, fresh herbs, veegetable/fruit plants, nuts, eggs, dairy, meat and fish.
Each household enrolled in the program is eligible to receive a minimum of $27/week in coupons. The program runs throughout the summer months when produce is most abundant across the province and coupons can be used at any participating BC Farmers' Markets. In 2022, coupons can be used in the Comox Valley beginning June through October.
